Tactical RPGs are making a comeback with The DioField Chronicle

Also revealed during tonight’s PlayStation’s State of Play, The DioField Chronicle looks fun although it looks bad. The trailer showcased what Square Enix calls Real Time Tactical Battle. This means that, like in a Real Time Strategy game, the units will move freely to their designated point on the battlefield. But, instead of attacking automatically, the players then choose which action to perform.

From what we could see, we have ranged attacks, close quarters attacks, mounted attacks but also summons. The trailer showed one character summoning what looks like a version of Bahamut. This looks great. But instead of using the HD-2D engine the company seems rightfully so fond of, they used a 3D engine that doesn’t look the best. But at least it looks fun to play unlike Valkyrie Elysium

The DioField Chronicle is set to be released on PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam in 2022. With Live A Live, Front Mission and the already released Triangle Strategy, 2022 is shaping to be one of the best year for TRPG enthusiasts. It’s been a long time so I’m very happy to see it.
